Top 5 Most Popular Football Clubs

Some people like to watch basketball while others may like to watch rugby but the fact is that football is the most popular sport in the world. 111.3 million people watched the 2017 Super Bowl and 66 million people watched the 2011 Cricket World Cup, but nothing comes close to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which attracted an amazing viewership of 3.2 billion. That is almost half the world population!

Every avid football fan is bound to have a club that he holds close to his heart. Here we take a look at 5 of the most popular clubs on Instagram! Is your team on the list?

5. PSG

PSG made headlines last year when they announced the signing of Neymar from Barcelona for a staggering £200m, which was over double the transfer record at that time (£93m for Paul Pogba from Juventus to Manchester United).

Part of PSG’s immense following could be attributed to the signing of the Brazilian superstar. The most liked post on PSG’s Instagram page was that announcing the signing of Neymar, with a staggering 684k likes!

There was also an immense growth in following on PSG’s Instagram page right after the announcement of Neymar’s signing and though the audience growth slowed down eventually, it is still greater than before the signing took place.

4. Bayern Munich (12.0M)

Top 5 Following Countries

Bayern Munich seems to face no real competition, having won 5 consecutive Bundesliga titles and are awaiting a 6th. With countless German legends like Franz Beckenbauer, Oliver Kahn, Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger having played for the Bavarian club, it is no wonder that the majority of the fan base is German.

Plaudits to those managing the Instagram account though for keeping things fun and entertaining! Take a look at some of the pictures they posted previously.

Manchester United is the 3rd most popular club with countless great players in the past such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, just to name a few.

Fans from Indonesia and India lead in following the Manchester United Instagram account. The popularity of the club in India could be attributed to the glamour factor of David Beckham, ex-Manchester United Player, who had an Indian film named after his iconic shooting skill “Bend it like Beckham”.

It is surprising though that there aren’t significant followings from other Asian countries like Japan and Korea despite Japan international Shinji Kagawa and Korean football legend Park Ji Sung having donned the famous red jersey in the past.

Happy birthday to Ji-sung Park from everyone at #MUFC! 🎉

2. Barcelona (55.6M)

Barcelona may be destined to win the La Liga title this season but they lose out on top spot in this popularity contest by a very slim margin. With arguably one of the biggest legends of the generation, Lionel Messi, in their team, they beat Manchester United in this list by a pretty substantial margin. It remains to be seen however whether latest Brazilian signing Coutinho will emulate his predecessor Neymar and become a social media star or just let his football skills do the talking on the pitch.
