The Battle Of The Avengers…On Instagram

Spider-Man: Homecoming has been the talk of the town amongst Marvel fans. There have even been discussions going on about what this means for future Avengers related movies. In the heat of things, some would even dare debate about which Avenger is the best.

Today I want to put an end to that discussion by using the science of influencer marketing to determine just that.

After braving howling gales on icy cold mountains and scorching deserts, I managed to find the best Avenger according to a few Instagram criteria.

So before I start rolling out the best Avenger, allow me to introduce the candidates. To qualify as a candidate, the accounts had to be verified and official accounts of the Avenger. Unfortunately, not all the Avengers are on Instagram and thus could not take part in this competition.

So the categories of this competition are set based on 3 crucial factors of influencer marketing which allow us to gauge how “influential” the Avenger truly is. Namely, the influencer’s reach, engagement rate and percentage of US following.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us begin.

1. Reach

So the first thing anyone looks for in an influencer is the number of followers he has. Naturally, the first category follows suit.

Tony Stark Instagram

Robert Downey Jr. takes the cake in this category with 15.7m followers. That’s bigger than the population size of 161 other countries!

2. Engagement

Although the number of followers shows muscle, the power of an influencer is measured with the rate of engagement with their audience.

The engagement rate here is measured by likes + comments as a percentage of the total following. It proves that their followers are truly listening to what they have to say, and have developed a relationship personal enough to give their input.

It’s not surprising that the winner of this category is your friendly-neighbourhood-superhero, Tom Holland. Congratulations, Spidey!

3. US Following

It goes without saying that these celebrities are well known globally. And this reflects well in their Instagram following. However, local influence is equally important. Here, I’ve analysed their audience demographic to see who ranks the top in having the largest proportion of US following.

Nick Fury Instagram

Having acted in so many of America’s favourite movies like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Die Hard, it’s not surprising that Samuel L. Jackson is the champion in this category of having the largest percentage of US following.

And with every Marvel movie, we can’t forget our honourable mention of Stan Lee.

Let’s see if we spot him on screen tomorrow.
