During the 2016 Olympics, he was the gold medallist in the 100m butterfly race, attaining Singapore’s very first Olympic gold medal and the whole nation celebrated his victory. He is Joseph Schooling, a 22 years old Singapore swimmer and pride of the nation.
This year, Schooling is taking part in the FINA World Championships held from July 14 – 30 in Budapest. During the qualifying rounds on last Sunday, the Singapore Olympic Champion clocked a personal best of 23.05s. He later proceeded to beat his earlier record with 22.93s in the second semi-final. With that, Schooling sets a new Asian and national record twice in the meet.
However, it was a dissapointing Monday night for everyone when Schooling finished fifth in the men’s 50m butterfly with a timing of 22.95s. However, this young man right here has not lose hope and is still in the pursuit for a better result.
Schooling said after the race: “It’s fine, obviously disappointed with the positioning, time was fine, that set me up for a good 100m fly, just learn from the race and move on. (It’s) my second best time, but I got beat by four better guys in the 50 fly. This is my first final for World Champs, I got a feel of the atmosphere, mentality, mindset and the progression from prelim, to semi-final and final. (Today Online)”.
Schooling had set a goal of winning two gold medals in the 50m and 100m swim as well as setting a new world record in this meet. Despite the dissapointing results for this match, he promised to bounce back and perform even better results for the remaining two events (we love his spirit!).
After pulling out of the 200m butterfly heat today, Schooling will be back again for the 100m freestyle heats and we are all rooting for him!
Swimming aside, as a millennial, Schooling is relatively active on social media platforms like Instagram, updating his followers on his latest competition location and also daily snippets. With a charasmatic smile and amazing build, it is not surprising that more than half of Schooling’s followers are females (56.58%) and he is also very popular among the millennials (56.76%) – statistics from Popular Chips.
To end off the article, let’s have a look at his top Instagram posts (@josephschooling) in the past 3 months and we wish him all the best in his next event!
