Just 2 days ago (from the day this article was written), the music video for BLΛƆKPIИK’s As If It’s Your Last celebrated its 600M view milestone, making it the band’s third music video to reach 600M views on YouTube, following Boombayah and Ddu-du-ddu-du.
This also means that they are the first korean-pop (k-pop) group to have three music videos with over 600M views.
If this doesn’t scream IMPRESSIVE, then I don’t know what does.
Before I go on to tell you why these women are Global Superstars in the making, let me just give you a quick rundown of the group and their members, for the benefit of those who are hearing of these young women for the first time.
🔥 BLΛƆKPIИK 🔥
BLΛƆKPIИK consists of four talented young women with diverse backgrounds – Jennie, Rosé, Jisoo and Lisa. They made their debut in 2016 with chart toppers Boombayah and Whistle.
Lisa | Main Dancer and Lead Rapper | 19.8M followers
With 19.8M followers, Lisa is the member with the most number of followers on Instagram.
She also has the highest engagement rate of 14.48% and the second highest audience growth rate of 8.26%.
This shows that Lisa is rising quickly in popularity and her followers are completely enthralled by her posts.
Fun Fact: This talented young woman was born in Thailand but moved to South Korea at a young age to pursue her dream. As such, she can speak a variety of languages – Thai, English, Korean, Japanese and basic Chinese.
Jennie | Main Rapper | 17.1M followers
Jennie is the member with the second highest number of followers on Instagram.
Fun Fact: She was born in South Korea but lived in New Zealand for five years. As such, she is very fluent in English.
Rosé | Main Vocalist | 15.2M followers
Despite being the member with the third highest number of followers on Instagram, Rosé sees the greatest audience growth of all the members with 8.69% growth.
Fun Fact: Rosé was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia.
Jisoo | Lead Vocalist | 14.5M followers
Jisoo is the only member born and raised in South Korea.
Fun Fact: Jisoo speaks Korean, Japanese and basic Chinese. While she is said to understand English very well, she doesn’t like to speak English because she thinks she sounds weird 😂
Now that you know a little more about these young women, I’m going to jump into the 5 reasons why they are Global Superstars in the making.
1) They have audiences across Asia and America
The BLΛƆKPIИK members are clearly icons of k-pop in Asia, with at least 40% of their audience residing in Asia. They are particularly popular in Indonesia, as more than 25% of each girls’ following come from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Their burgeoning popularity in the States is also reflected in their follower demographics, as each of the ladies have at least 6% of followers from the States 🇺🇸
In fact, they are so popular that they even appeared on the Late Late Show with James Corden and was the first k-pop girl group invited to perform at Coachella.
Two posts about BLΛƆKPIИK’s performance made it to the top 10 posts with the highest engagement on Coachella’s Instagram account!
The top post had the greatest number of likes and comments of all Coachella’s Instagram posts, indicating how hyped people were about the performance and how much they loved it.
A post about the girl group’s debut at Coachella also featured as Billboard’s top 10 posts with the most engagement.
With these incredible results, I headed to the Instagram account for The Late Late Show. Once again, two posts featuring BLΛƆKPIИK ranked within the top 10 posts with the highest engagement.
The top post had the most number of likes and the second highest number of comments for any post.
These ladies are seriously not to be messed with.
2) They are Fashion Icons
These ladies have an amazing sense of fashion.
Their ability to pull off any look from classy…
To colourful and funky…
To fierce girl bosses…
Make them one of the most versatile fashion icons of k-pop!
Jennie is also known as the ‘Human Gucci’ among fans ever since she sported (and totally rocked) multiple Gucci outfits like the one below.
Since then, luxury brands like Chanel have taken notice of her, and she was made Chanel’s Korean ambassador in 2018. Fans are loving her as Chanel’s Korean ambassador so much that even a sponsored post landed in her top 10 most engaging posts, which is uncommon for sponsored content.
3) They are Incredibly Talented
These young women are seriously talented – whether in singing, dancing, rapping, or being comedic 😂
As the main vocalist of the group, Rosé is definitely a master of her craft. Yet, what makes her stand out from the crowd is her unique voice. Even while donning a mask, the audience was able to recognise the singer from her soulful voice.
Check out the clip below!
Long before Jennie became the main rapper of BLΛƆKPIИK, she showcased her versatility in the arts by featuring in a number of songs by her agency seniors.
Even after becoming a part of BLΛƆKPIИK, Jennie continues to showcase her singing and rapping talents.
Lisa is the main dancer of BLΛƆKPIИK, and for good reason. Back in Thailand, she was part of a dance crew titled ‘We Zaa Cool’. Even after becoming a part of the girl group, she continues to showcase her dancing skills through covers to songs such as Jason Derulo’s Swalla.
While the other girls in the group take the crown for singing, dancing and rapping, Jisoo has a talent for making people laugh. Her unique sense of humour and quirky personality makes her the joker of the group.
4) They have appeared on Billboard Charts MULTIPLE times
The girl group’s latest single Kill This Love, was the highest charting song on Billboard’s Hot 100 for any k-pop girl group. The song also became BLΛƆKPIИK’s fifth song to rank #1 on World Digital Song Sales following Boombayah, Playing With Fire, As If It’s Your Last and Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du. BLΛƆKPIИK was also the first k-pop girl group to own the #1 spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart in 2018.
Their amazing feat became a sensation as the hashtag #BLACKPINKXBILLBOARD trended with over 70k comments and 1.6k likes on Instagram.
5) Their Amazing Collaboration with International Artists
When it was first announced that BLΛƆKPIИK would be collaborating with Dua Lipa, the English singer with 29.9M followers on Instagram, everyone went into the frenzy. The collaboration song, Kiss and Make Up, now has 110M views on YouTube.
They are also rumoured to collaborate with DJ Snake, though this has yet to be confirmed by BLΛƆKPIИK. These collaborations show that BLΛƆKPIИK is truly going global, not just targeting Asia, but also American and Europe.
With these 5 reasons, don’t you think they are deserving of the title Global Superstars in the making?
