5 Inspirational Collaborations You Need To See This #PrideMonth

A Beautiful Representation From Voices We Don’t Hear Very Often

It’s only been 7 days into June but there’s already been a myriad of collaborations by brands for this special month. While there are hundreds of collaborations, we sieved out 5 that are awe-inspiring. These brands took extra care in representing such a sensitive topic and really showed their support for the LGBTQ+ community elegantly. So hold tight to your seats as we get to the list:

1. Blair Imani for Fossil

With piercing eyes, @BlairImani is a woman who is not afraid to fight for her rights. She is an Afro-American Muslim woman who also identifies as queer and is best known for her activism in the Baton Rouge shootings, where she peacefully protested against the police shootings of Alton Sterling, even getting arrested for doing so. Since then, she became executive director of ‘@EqualityForHER’ and is active in many other groups including ‘@BlackLivesMatter‘. Coming from one of the most discriminated backgrounds, she has fought so much to get to where she is today.

With such powerful background, its no wonder that @Fossil wants to share Blair’s story to their audience in line with the release of their rainbow watches, where 100% of their proceeds will go to the Hetrick Martin Institute for LGBTQ+ youth who requires counselling, health and wellness services, career development, liberal arts activities.

Moreover, we see a steep increase in followers the day after the release of the video with Blair on the 4th of June, seemingly to show their support to the brand’s cause this Pride Month.

2. Samson Bonkeabantu Brown for Gillette

Samson is a transgender artist, or what he likes to call ‘Jamal of all Hustles’. While he has had little space to voice out his feeling as a transgender during his childhood, his parents have been very supportive of his transition and have been with him all throughout.

@Gillette partnered with Samson for #MyBestSelf, capturing the intimate moment where he does his first shave as while taking some coaching lessons from his father. Samson has also added in his Facebook post after the video went viral that :

I hope that my story uplifts my other trans siblings in the transgender and non-binary community.

3. Marc Jacobs x sageUSA

Marc Jacobs is a very successful American Fashion Designer who is the head designer of his own fashion label of the same name and owns the Marc Jacobs cosmetics line. @TheMarcJacobs has also just married his now-husband Char Defrancesco back in April 2019, at the age of 56.

As an advocate for older adults in the LGBTQ+ community, Marc has decided to do a collaboration on his make-up line with SageUSA, which is a Service and Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Elders. 10% of the retail price of each limited-edition Enamored (with Pride) Dazzling Gloss sold between June 6 2019, and July 10 2019, will be donated to @SageUSA.

The promotional post on the gloss’ release is the only photo from May (late May at that) that is on the top 10 posts on @marcjacobsbeauty. With over 30,000 likes, the image is at the 7th highest position and is much more popular than some of the older posts in April. The post also has engagement rates of 3 times its average posts (0.9% vs. 0.3%), indicating that the collaboration is a positive buzz topic for its target audience.

4. Desmond Napoles for Converse

@DesmondIsAmazing is an 11-year-old Drag Kid who has autism and is one of the few child activists of the LGBTQ+ community. He has taken part in the ‘Gays Against Guns’ which is a protest against guns in school and was presented the Marsha P. Johnson ‘Don’t be Outraged, Be Outrageous’ Award in 2018. Being a young public figure, there have been many voices of concern about his sexuality but he has braved through them all and has not strayed off his goal of inspiring other youths in a similar situation to be brave.

@Converse was definitely impressed by his courageousness and contacted Desmond in hopes to make him the prime ambassador for their Pride Month release. The proceeds from this collection will be going to the LGBTQ+ employees at Converse, who were the inspiration for the Pride Collection since 2014.

One thing’s for sure. The collaboration has engaged many of Converse’s followers. To date, the post received 3,305 comments, which is also the MOST comments the brand has gotten this year!

While there have been some mixed feelings from the public, a good majority finds the collaboration inspiring, with comments such as these:

We know @badiewinkle (Helen Ruth Elam Van Winkle) as the 90-year-old influencer who took Social media by storm with her iconic phrase: Stealing your man since 1928. Not only is she THE InstaGrandma of the century, but she also launched her collaboration with makeup company ‘Inc.redible’ called ‘No Bad Days’.

Dropping just in time for Pride Month, 5% of the collection’s proceeds will be going to ‘The Trevor Project’, a non-profit suicide prevention centre for the LGBTQ+ community. Despite not being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, she hopes to shed light on the community, featuring influencers like @kombucci who are using her products.

3 out of 10 of the top performing posts are about @baddiewinkle’s new line, which is pretty amazing considering that these posts are recent (Posted on the last week of May). In addition, I took a look at the account’s hashtags that is specific to the line #BeYourBaddestSelf:

@incrediblecosmetics’ top performing hashtags in the last 3 monthsprovided by Popular Chips

Despite only having 13 mentions, #BeYourBaddestSelf attains almost the same amount of average likes as the top performing hashtag with 50 mentions, #LidSlick and higher average comments than other hashtags like #BounceBlush and #JellySpray. This shows that @baddiewinkle’s collaboration is a definite hit with followers and I am sure that as more posts pour in, this hashtag will become even more popular.

I’d personally aspire to be as productive as Grandma Winkle is at 90 years old too and help others whenever I can. What did you think about these collaborations? Are they inspiring to you too?
